This orchestra's repertoire of punk classics includes songs by fear, operation ivy, x, siouxsie the banshees, dead kennedys, and and the voidoids.
"Punk culture has become quite stylized and perhaps static,"Says orchestra founder, explaining the origins of the orchestra. "The original idea was to let anybody play and do anything they felt deeply about.It's now time for punk in the 21st century to try some radical experimentation.Punks like mozart and beethoven used these instruments, so we decided to see what would happen if we got rid of electric guitars and got back to 'real' instruments. "
Some of the musicians have only high school marching band experience, some have toured in punk, rock or performanceart bands, while others are highly trained current and former members of orchestras, opera companies and symphonies from throughout the bay area.
These talent imbalances are, in ferguson's view, perfectly punk.But they have posed quite a challenge for bandleader, who has to rein all the players into a cohesive whole.

"Everyone felt they were above it, so i did it myself,"Gluck says. "I just made weird signals at the orchestra to indicate when something was about to change.Actually, everything i learned about conducting i got from watching. "
The band was born in 2002 when ferguson imagined what it would be like to hear punk tunes played as chamber music.Sending his idea out via a craigslist ad for musicians, ferguson received a flood of interest.After some initial quartets and quintets, he encouraged gluck to try to arrange some punk music for a larger group of musicians.
"One of the most difficult things about this project is that there was no original sheet music,"Gluck says. "Punk music is fairly undocumented outside of audio sources.We don't ever significantly alter the form or lyrics of a song except to try to make the song shorter and less repetitive. "
This past spring, the orchestra was invited to record its first album at by grammy awardwinning sound engineer.
It turns out that jones' father was spike jones, the wildly creative big band leader from the 1940s who was also ferguson's childhood musical hero.
"I told leslie that(The punk rock orchestra)Had a lot to do with the craziness her dad started many years ago, and that we intended to continue his vision,"Ferguson says.
